I am not the creator of this plugin, but for the first error, it sounds like your hosting company has some security measures (disabling exec() in PHP) that are interfering with the plugin. You may want to contact them about that.

For the other errors, you can see that you're getting file not found errors. Have you tried FTPing to your site and seeing what directory it puts you in and what it thinks root (/) is? I see it's leaving out /home/siteroot, so that could be your problem - more security measures from your hosting company.

Unfortunately, I don't know of a workaround other than doing a manual upgrade.

I'm attempting to upgrade a Wordpress 1.5.2 installation, and some errors have cropped up. The WP installation is in /home/siteroot/public_html/geekman/. On the initial plugin page, the following error appears:

Warning: exec() has been disabled for security reasons in /home/siteroot/public_html/geekman/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/wpau_prelimcheck.class.php on line 106

Upon clicking the 'Let's Go' button, the following page shows these errors:

Warning: ftp_site() [function.ftp-site]: Could not change perms on /public_html/geekman: No such file or directory in /home/siteroot/public_html/geekman/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/wpau_prelimcheck.class.php on line 192

I have not tried to start the upgrade itself. Please advise on a workaround for these errors.

Hi,

First, thanks for writing this plugin.

I am trying to run it and am failing during the maint. mode phase:

Warning: copy(/home/yurchuk/public_html/philip/index.php.wpau.bak) [function.copy]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/yurchuk/public_html/philip/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/wpau_upgrade.class.php on line 359

This is because WPAU thinks it does NOT need to use FTP, but it does. Not your fault, just the way my hosting company works (not even the 777 trick will work). WP's automatic upgrade for plugins works great because it uses FTP every time.

I'm hoping there's an easy way to force WPAU to use FTP, like maybe modifying a function to return false? I'd like to hear from the creator before I go destroying my site with ignorant mods.

Thanks again!

Hi there,

I am using plesk 8.0.0 should that be of any importance.
All the different steps seems to go like they should but I don't think it is actually upgrading as in overwriting the files. The site remains in Maintenance mode now and I don't seem to be able to fix that.

The logs report the following error:
Task Name: upgrade
Task Description: Upgrades all the installation files
Task Status: Complete
Task Start Date: 2008-09-12 09:56:47
Task End Date: 2008-09-12 09:56:47
Task Log: ERROR -> Could not read either the source directory /var/www/vhosts/familiebronnen.nl/httpdocs/wpau-backup/wordpress/wp-admin or the traget directory /var/www/vhosts/familiebronnen.nl/httpdocs/wp-admin
ERROR -> Could not read either the source directory /var/www/vhosts/familiebronnen.nl/httpdocs/wpau-backup/wordpress/wp-includes or the traget directory /var/www/vhosts/familiebronnen.nl/httpdocs/wp-includes

I have to enter my ftp data for my server does not seem to let the plugin write on the server itself.. I have checked and the files indeed have not been updated, so something is going wrong.

Does anyone have a clue what's going wrong here and how I can fix this?

Thanks,
DeFries

Plugin failed (changing permissions to 777 didn't help). Whatever, I'll do it by hand, I guess. Like others, I have a nonstandard wp installation file structure, fwiw.

But now I can't even delete the WPAU plugin directory. When I delete the folder, everything plinks along fine until this:

250 Deleted ftp_class.php
DELE .pureftpd-upload.487f8d31.15.37b6.f1d6311a
550 Prohibited file name: .pureftpd-upload.487f8d31.15.37b6.f1d6311a : /public_html/wp/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/.pureftpd-upload.487f8d31.15.37b6.f1d6311a
CWD /public_html/wp/wp-content/plugins
250 OK. Current directory is /public_html/wp/wp-content/plugins
RMD wordpress-automatic-upgrade
550 Can't remove directory: Directory not empty : /public_html/wp/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade

The ".pureftpd" file has permissions 0 0 0 , I can't change those. What is it? What can I do about it? I imagine this is a site administration issue as far as getting rid of the thing, but I thought I'd mention it here too in case there's some simple fix.

I am having the same issue...my host (TextDrive/Joyent, http://textdrive.com) only allows SFTP access to their accounts. I've even tried using a :22 in the host box (e.g. simplicio.com:22) to no avail. I see from other posts that you are using port 21, which is standard FTP.

Please give us an option to connect via SFTP to make the changes to our file permissions; it is in the interests of security as well. Alternatively/in addition, when the FTP process fails, give the user specific information as to what the file permissions need to be changed to, and for what folders/files. I am happy to do it myself, but give me documentation on what you need changed, and to what. For instance, tell me that you need all the files and folders from the root of my WordPress install chmod'ed to 666 or 777, etc.

Thanks in advance!
